Event Name:  2019 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS)
Event Date: 4-8 November 2019
Venue: The Venetian Macao
Number of Delegates: 3,600
Interviewee:  Prof. Dong Sun, IROS conference general chair

Macao is an ideal destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and other events – the city offers an enticing blend of both business and leisure opportunities. That’s one of the reasons Macao was chosen for the IROS Conference 2019. The conference was particularly focusing on domain-wise, medicine, computing, especially high-speed computing, embodiment, which is the interaction between human and robots, as well as the micro-Nano intelligent robot systems. Other important topics were automation, manufacturing, medicine, service, aging society and more.

What were the highlights of your event?

This conference was about Intelligent Robots and Systems. We are happy that this very important robotics conference was held in Macao, attracted three thousands six hundred participants from all different parts of the world, with speakers from fifty-three countries that all industrial experts, professors and other people came to Macao to discuss what happened in intelligent robots in the past year and the vision for the future.

What have been your event objectives? Did you achieve these objectives?

In this five-day program, we run a lot of different events. We had workshop tutorials, plenty keynote speeches, oral sessions, post sessions, exhibitions, different forums, as well as robot competitions. We hope that all people had a rewarding exchange in this five-day program in Macao.

What are the legacy outcomes from the event?

The IROS conference was a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge technologies, planning for the future and addressing future challenges for the development of robots and intelligent systems. The theme of this year's event was robots connecting people reflecting the future challenge of how robots must be smarter to better serve people.

Have you hosted events in other places? What were your main reasons for choosing Macao as your event destination?

Five to six years ago, some people asked me: Why Macao? and whether or not Macao had suitable facilities to host such a big conference? Macao proved to be a good choice. We also received strong support from Macao, without which, we could not have made IROS 2019 such a big success.
